Every city seems to do these covers a little bit differently. I think my fascination with photographing them is analogous to making quilt blocks. I’m envisioning eventually having a large grid of these images.
Shells and Foam
From the beach at Cape May. The tide was coming in.
Blue 102 – from the back
This is the same engine as in the last post. The back end was decorated with chevron stripes, which I could not resist. More train and shore photos tomorrow…
Blue Train – 102
On our way down to Cape May, my brother took us on a small detour to pass by what we thought was a siding full of abandoned train cars near Winslow Junction. Turns out, it is not at all abandoned, but an active line that is used for transporting lumber and building supplies to Atlantic City, among other places. How did we learn this? Well, we ran into the caretaker, who was initially not very happy about us being there. After we talked to him for a couple of minutes, he seemed satisfied that we were not terrorists, and let…
Back from Cape May
This is the lighthouse at Cape May Point. Cape May, NJ is a Victorian seaside resort town, about two hours from my parents’ house. We had beautiful weather: sunny and unseasonably warm. My family and I spent a few days at Cape May, relaxing (without internet access!), taking pictures and finishing up the Christmas shopping. So, to make up for being absent for a few days, I’ll post a few new photos today.
Lily Pads – Desaturated
The same image, desaturated with the Adobe Raw tools. This is the very first direct-to-digital image that I played with, and I was stunned by how much creative latitude the raw format gives you. It makes me not miss my darkroom quite as much any more.
Lily Pads – Full Color
Lily pads in the pond at the UC Botanical Garden.
Agave Imprint
Closeup of an agave leaf in the UC Berkeley Botanical Gardens. The indentations that mirror the points on the edge of the leaf form when the leaves are tightly folded together at the center of the plant. As the plant grows and the leaves unfurl, the dents remain.
Pink Spottty Rose Frills
Hey, that title could be a band name! From the Berkeley Rose Garden a couple of months ago, on a Sunday morning after a yummy breakfast at Tacubaya. This was the first expedition Dan and I took as part of a plan to get out at least once a week to shoot. His knee problems flared up again, and nixed that grand plan for a while. We’ll have to pick that up again after the holidays…
Equitable Gas
I spent Labor Day weekend in Pittsburgh, with my two best pals, Jen and Donna, their husbands (both Scott), and Jen’s kids Logan and Brenna. After a fabulous birthday brunch for Jen on Sunday, we took a stroll through the hip neighborhood. A lot of the stores were closed, but it was still fun to window shop. So far, everything I’ve posted here has been older work, that has been scanned from slides or negatives that span the last twenty years. I’m going to mix it up a bit for the next couple of weeks while we are on vacation….
