A travelling carnival comes to our neighborhood twice a year, and Dan and I like to go shoot it. He’s got a real knack for striking up conversations with strangers, and we’ve heard some interesting stories while talking to the folks working the carnival. There’s something about the combination of the cameras and the conversation that intantly takes us out of the category of “mark,” and puts them at ease with him.
Lone White Rock
More on the beach theme, though I can’t recall where this one was taken.
Fish on Fence
This is a detail from a fence at Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester, MA. I used to live a short drive from this beach, and I loved to go there after work to see the sunset.
Dunes in Winter
My friend Donna and I have dramatically different preferences in many things, temperature being one of them. She loves the summertime heat, and I love the rain and cold weather. During the year that we shared an apartment, I managed to drag her to the beach near our place in the winter. This was one of about three shots I managed to get while she waited in the car, muttering about what kind of idiot wants to be at the beach when there’s snow on the ground.
Fish Story Lodge
This whimsical bird house was found in Rockport, MA, part of a beautiful day of hiking with my dear friends Donna and Scott. It’s a treat to have friends who are also photographers!
Ivy Leaf and Curlicue
Spotted on a wildflower hike at Point Reyes National Seashore.
Vinyl
Near the University in Glasgow, Scotland – my dad’s alma mater. This image is a consistent favorite among friends and strangers alike. Guess it helps that I’m surrounded by musicians a lot of the time.
Beach Glass
Dan and I spent several very pleasurable hours on our bellies at Glass Beach in Mendocino a few years ago.
Knotted Rope
Another early favorite, taken on a family camping trip to Bar Harbor, Maine.
Blurred Daisies
From one of the very first rolls of slide film I shot, when I was about 14. My ongoing love of Kodachrome started early! This image was taken in the gardens of the Harkness Mansion in Connecticut – one of my favorite places. When I lived on the East Coast, I went to this state park over and over. I still really like this photo, fifteen-odd years and a BFA in photography later.
